What they have to do with writing something of value
I recently saw a video of author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie talking about self-doubt and self-belief, and how you need both qualities to write, to create.
When I heard this I sensed a subtle shift inside my body. She's right.
I struggle with self-doubt, and as a intuitive coach, I work with myself and others, to move past it as an obstacle to writing. And that's a necessary thing. However, here she reminds me, and you too, that not only is this sense of uncertainty in ourselves normal, it's essential to the creative process. If we're not doubting, it could well be a sign that we've fallen into complacency with our work.
That we're too comfortable in our relationship with our writing.
In fact, if I think back for example, to signing up for a live course to write the first draft of my novel, I was riddled with self-doubt. The first half of the course, I kept hearing my mind say things like You'll never finish. You'll get behind, and then you won't be able to catch up. This will be another unfinished draft. But I was able recognized that for what it was -mistrust of myself born of fear, my mind trying to keep me safe, and I wrote anyway.
Yes, it's good to focus on where self-doubt might be stopping you from making time to write or picking up your pen. And, it's equally good to remember that it's a vital part of doing something of value.
How have self-doubt and self-belief shown up for you?
