What's Keeping You From Writing?

You're probably not missing what you think you are

Maybe you relate to this.

You've been feeling this draw toward writing for a long time — maybe your whole life — and for whatever reason, you've been having trouble making space for it. You keep pushing it aside for other things, other people, other obligations.

This idea that you have to write, or even that you can write, is a small flame inside that won't leave you alone. You can forget about it for a while — busy with work or kids or everything else — but it's always there, at the edges.

Or maybe you don't have a project or a writing dream in mind, but it's just a longing to express yourself, a feeling that doing so would unlock something and you'd feel more at home in your own life.

Either way, you may have been feeling this for a long time. You might even be starting to panic — like the years are passing by, like time is running out.

You might be wondering: what's wrong with me that I can't seem to do this thing I love?

You might think you're lacking something — discipline, desire, focus, money — something. If you only had it, you'd finally be able to write.

It's possible you need a few skills or a bit of clarity, but I think there's more to it than that.

Doing the thing you love, just because you love it and for no other reason, is about claiming your voice — your right to want and be and do exactly what you want in this world.

That's not a small thing. I'd say it's actually the whole thing.

What do you think is really keeping you from writing?
